What is the Mission Grocer about?
Mission Grocer is here to make fresh, healthy food accessible to everyone. We’re part of a wider social mission to support community wellbeing, reduce food insecurity, and offer dignity through choice.
Where do we get our produce from?
We source our fruit and vegetables from a mix of local growers, wholesalers, and suppliers, with the help of Foodtogether, a national social enterprise in Aotearoa that helps communities access affordable fresh fruit and vegetables through local co‑ops, hubs, and pop‑ups. Our focus is always on offering fresh, affordable kai to the community.
Is the produce organic?
Most of our produce is not certified organic. We prioritise keeping prices low and accessible. When we do have organic items, we label them clearly.
Do customers have to pay for the kai?
Yes — but only a small, accessible price. Mission Grocer exists to make fresh food affordable for everyone, so our prices are intentionally low.
Is the produce local / from NZ?
Most of our produce is grown here in Aotearoa. Some items (like bananas or certain off‑season produce) may be imported. We choose local whenever possible.
How do we price the items?
We keep prices low by buying smartly, reducing waste, keeping overheads down, and passing savings directly to customers. Our pricing covers some operational costs while staying true to our mission of affordable kai.
How do we afford to sell at these prices?
We operate with a low‑margin, community‑focused model. By keeping costs down and working with supportive suppliers, we can offer produce at fair, affordable prices. We operate a hybrid social model, meaning some operational costs are covered by grants and fundraising.
Can anyone shop here?
Absolutely — everyone is welcome. Whether you’re looking for affordable kai, supporting our mission, or just love a good deal, this space is for you.
Will customers take away from someone who needs it more by also shopping here?
Not at all. When you shop with us, you help sustain the model. The more people who shop here, the more produce we can offer, and the more affordable we can keep prices for everyone.
What happens to the profits?
Any surplus goes straight back into the mission — supporting community programmes, keeping prices low, reducing food insecurity, and strengthening the services we provide.
