About Mission Grocer

A neighbourhood grocer with community at its heart.

We're a small grocery shop in central Auckland with a simple belief — that fresh, healthy food should be within reach of everyone in our city.

Our story

Built on the idea that good food belongs to everyone.

Mission Grocer began as a small experiment inside HomeGround — Auckland City Mission's home in central Auckland. The question was simple: could a real grocery shop, with great produce at fair prices, sit alongside the social work the Mission has done for over a century?

Already, the answer is growing. We source fresh fruit and veg from local growers, stock the pantry staples our neighbours rely on, and welcome shoppers who live, work, stay, and visit through the same front door. Every purchase, and every 'pay it forward' at the till, helps keep healthy food accessible for the people who need it most.

Our history

A short walk through the years.

From a quiet idea inside HomeGround to two shops, five days a week — here's how Mission Grocer grew.

  1. 1920

    Auckland City Mission begins.

Te Tāpui Atawhai opens its doors as a small mission supporting Aucklanders in need — a century-long story of care that Mission Grocer is part of today.

HomeGround opens on Hobson and Federal Streets.

The Mission's purpose-built home in central Auckland brings food, housing and health services under one roof — and sets the stage for a different kind of grocery shop.

  3. March 2025

    Mission Grocer opens its doors.

A real grocery shop, with great produce at fair prices, sits alongside the Mission's social work. Same front door, same warm welcome, for everyone in the city.

Five days a week, and counting.

Today, Mission Grocer is open five days a week across two shops — and we're still listening, still growing, still everyone's grocer.

    Today
What we stand for

Three simple ideas that shape the shop.

— i.

Fresh, local, fair.

We work with growers and suppliers we know, and price our shelves so good food is within reach — not a luxury. Quality you'd expect from a great greengrocer, at a price that makes sense.

— ii.

Everyone is welcome.

One shop, one door, one community. Whether you're popping in for tonight's dinner or accessing the pay-it-forward system, you'll get the same warm hello and the same fresh produce.

— iii.

Dignity through choice.

Food support that feels like grocery shopping — because it is. You choose what to take home, what your family will cook, and how to feed the people you love.

By the community, for the community — fresh fruit and veg at fair prices, for everyone.
